Paint correction

Paint correction in Hackettstown

Hand wash, clay bar and machine polishers, with the depth set by the age and condition of your paint.

Chapter 01

What paint correction removes

Paint correction takes swirls, wash marring and scratches out of the clear coat instead of filling them and hoping they stay hidden. The work is done by machine, after a hand wash and a clay bar pass, so the polisher is only ever cutting into clean paint.

Kimberly Roman brought in her black Jeep Gladiator after, in her words, “my entire car got scratched.” She left a Google review saying the shop “made it look brand new again.” A dark paint color shows every wash mark, which is why black vehicles are where correction is easiest to see.

Paint that is already in good shape needs less than paint that has been through years of automatic washes. How much correction it gets is a call made once the paint has been looked at.

How the shop does it

The order is always the same: a hand wash, a clay bar to pull bonded grit off the surface, then machine polishers. Skipping the first two steps is how fresh scratches get put into the paint, so they come first on every car in the bay at 400 High St.

How far the polishing goes depends on the car. Newer vehicles typically reach 40 to 50% defect removal, while older vehicles are taken to 80% or more. Those are the depths Auto Perfection works to, so a newer car and an older one do not get the same treatment.

Paint correction is an extra charge, assessed when you drop the car off and the paint has been looked over. Two of the detailing packages already include a level of it: Exterior Detailing at 75% defect removal and Interior + Exterior at 80%. The detailing packages list what each one covers.

Chapter 03

Why it comes before protection

A coating or a film seals in whatever is under it. Put either one over swirled paint and the swirls are locked in for as long as the protection lasts. Correction is the step that decides how the finish looks for years, so it is done first.

That is why ceramic coating at Auto Perfection starts with an exterior detail and paint correction, and why film is installed on paint that has been prepared the same way. If you are planning either one, plan on the correction first.

“…they made it look brand new again!” Kimberly Roman, Google review.

Start with the paint, then protect it

Once the clear coat is corrected, you can leave it with a wax sealant from one of the auto detailing packages, or move on to ceramic coating after correction or Llumar paint protection film.

Correction is priced after the paint has been seen, so there is no single number to print. Ask for a figure through the quote request form, or compare the base packages in the full price table by vehicle size.
